Felicity: Learning to Trust
Felicity has her own trust issues. Her father abandoned her as a child, so that is a huge trust issue. Her mother kept things from her, for her own good, yet that also created broken areas of trust. Our past certainly shapes our future, and we can see that in Felicity.
Felicity knows Oliver. She knows his past with women, she knows that he keeps secrets, and she knows that he hasn't even shared all of his past with her. She even understands this about him. Yet, she hopes that she can open that secret part of his heart that he doesn't allow anyone to see. Women do believe that they can change their man, but of course no one can change another person unless that other person wants to change. There are men who think they can change their women, no bias here, folks.
In season 4 episode 14, we have a wonderful conversation between Donna and Felicity. Donna says, "I want one man who wouldn't lie to me." Felicity's answer, "Maybe he's doing it to protect you, because he love you, and you, you need to return that love with a little bit of trust." The viewer knows the secret Oliver keeps from Felicity, and we think, great, she'll understand when she finds out. Felicity doesn't take her own advice. Have you wondered why?
I think the answer is complicated, but part of it lies in the fact that too many other people knew the secret. When she says something to the effect that it wold easier to tell who didn't know, we see the pain it caused her. I think Oliver's failure to include Felicity in his decision to let William go out of his life, she would not have left. Did it puzzle you that he talked with John and Vixen, and even Barry about his son, but he left Felicity out? It did me until I thought that Oliver has fear of losing Felicity, he doesn't have that fear with the others. Also, I think in the back of his mind there was Barry's idea that going back in time has consequences and Felicity, according to Barry, was angry over it. When will Barry learn to leave time alone...but that's for someone else to ponder.
In season 5 episode 3, did you notice Felicity's pride when Oliver listened to her? Will she ever trust Oliver? Will Oliver ever be free to be fully honest with Felicity? I guess we all want the answers to that.
So many hoped for a wedding for the 100th episode, and it doesn't look like we will get it, so we wait, and we trust that writers will continue to draw Oliver and Felicity closer together than even they ever thought possible.
