Arrow 510 Review Who Are You? Part 2
Sometimes it takes me a while to digest the whole of a show; especially if the show is one that has many different themes or ideas. Arrow, on its very best show, has different sometimes, for me anyway, hidden themes. So I have some added thoughts on Episode 10, Who Are You?"
The use of green:
In literature green often symbolizes harmony, and peace. Green often symbolizes growth. We had lots of green in this episode. We saw Oliver and Felicity together within a green background or setting. As the season progresses we will see more of this color. Oliver and Felicity have grown apart and now they have begun again to grow together. We will see more of Susan, but the writers are working toward the growth of Oliver and Felicity. Look how he protected her in the picture above. He shielded her.
The use of Red:
In literature red can symbolize passion. Felicity wore more red in the episode. This could have duel meanings. Of course there are those who hope it symbolizes the love and passion Felicity has for Oliver. But it could also symbolize the passion Felicity has to get Prometheus. She's very determined to step out on her own, as we saw in this episode. She took things into her own hands without telling Oliver. Remember how angry that made her when Oliver would do that? Now she's doing to him what he did with her. Look for how Oliver reacts to this. If they are going to rebuild a relationship between the two, then Oliver's reaction will greatly differ from hers last season, and that will have a huge impact on her. This darkness, this island, that Felicity has to face, could be a major growth for her character. Trials always change a person. If that person is surrounded by loving, caring people, then the growth and change are always for the better.
The Title: Who Are You? When we think of this question our minds go straight to Laurel. Is this Our Laurel? But this question in a way was asked of Curtis by Rene. Curtis wanted to quit because he couldn't do it, and yet Rene helped him so that he can finally be on his way to becoming Mr. Terrific.
I think in a way Oliver wondered about Felicity. Who is she becoming? He is concerned for her, and so was Rory when we wondered what she was doing in the lab and discovered that she went behind Oliver and got fingerprints on Laurel. Then Oliver and his altercation with Felicity by having her go over him and order the others to go on the field. This was certainly not like the "old" Felicity. She is changing, so a who are you, could be asked of her.
Felicity tells Oliver that she could get used to his new optimism. She in a way asks, Who are you?
This is Oliver being the light, and Felicity, who usually sees everything as optimistic has a bit of darkness in her. She has been through a much and seen much and it's affecting her, just as all Oliver's hardships on the Island and after affected him. Oliver had to have Felicity and Diggle teach him to see the light, to see the good, and embrace that light. Now Felicity and Diggle need him to be that light for them. Did you notice that in the picture of Oliver and Felicity there is an aqua green background for them?
Final Thoughts: The answers that each of the characters will give to who are you, will ultimately be their legacies. The showrunners have stated that this season is about legacy. Of course the show is Arrow and it's all about Oliver's legacy, but that's what's great about Arrow, they thread the theme through the other characters as well. So look for our other characters to discover their legacies.
