Felicity's Adversity: OTA Stronger Together
A few days ago I wrote about Oliver's adversity. Now, I thought I would focus on Felicity's adversity and her journey. In a way it mirror's Oliver's. Her character will reveal who she in her heart, and like Oliver, she will need help in coming out of her dark journey.
Felicity had a dark beginning. She and her boyfriend were hacktists. As I said in my other post, adversity doesn't build character, it reveals it. Felicity pulled the plug on her boyfriend's hacking, because she knew it was wrong. She tried to pull herself out, and she did succeed. She died her hair blond and began to use her computer skill for good, eventually working a Queen consolidated.
support her. Then she met Oliver, and he drew her into his world. There she has learned a a lot of hard things. Sometimes our trials seem small, but it is the small things built up over time that becomes difficult to bear, so in that sense her adversity has been different from Oliver's. So even though those trials of Felicity's seem small they are just as real. When she fell in love with Oliver, he seemed to toy with her affections. Hear me out, here, folks. He flirted with her, she flirted back. He asked her out, and then a day later, if that long, broke it off. All this because he was still in the throes of his torn soul. Finally they get together, and Damon Darhk appears to mess with their life. Then Oliver proposes, but Felicity is shot. She has to deal with the pain of being paralyzed, and learning to walk again. She survives that, and thinks her relationship is solid enough to marry Oliver, when she finds out he lies to her about having a son, and then he makes decisions that would affect both of them, and he doesn't tell her. She is once again shut out of a man's life. Her father shut her out, and then Oliver shut her out. Sure we could argue over whether that was big enough deal to call off a wedding, but to a young woman who has trust issues, it was a pretty big deal.
Then she had to make a choice of saving millions or killing thousands. That's a pretty tough choice, and she had to make it in a split second. Then if that were not enough, she moves on with her life, finds a boyfriend, and he gets killed by Oliver.
Do you remember from season 4, when Felicity was in the hospital, Oliver asked her how she got to be so strong? Her answer was, "I take my lead from you." So now she is taking her lead from him and seeking to use her computer skills to take down Prometheus. She is being drawn deeper into the darkness much as Oliver was before Diggle and Felicity began to help him see there was a different way.
In Wednesday's episode, she goes to work for Helix, but before they help her, she must do something for them. What will it be? Will she do it? There has always been a sense of right and wrong with Felicity, she didn't deal with the shades of gray. Will she now? In keeping this secret from Oliver, will she come to understand why Oliver kept secrets from her? Will she tell Oliver or Diggle, or even Thea?
Diggle said that the three of them, Diggle, Oliver, and Felicity, made each other better, isn't that their legacy?
When Felicity is made stronger in the furnace of affliction, and Oliver survives this current furnace he is in, won't they both the stronger for it? I think so, and I think they will be forged together, not apart. What do you think?
